The Young Diverse Media Trainee program (a spin off project from YMMP) has seen some of the young media trainees out and about making a film for the Sunshine Film Festival to be held in Sunshine, Melbourne in September. This provided a great opportunity to get out there in on the ‘West Side’ and get to know some locals.
It was decided by the group to shoot the film in Sunshine and we drew inspiration from the people and the streets around us. Dianne is director of the short documentary film about the Roli Poli Delicatessen. The shop has been in the area for many many years and sells yummy European cakes and more! The theme for the festival is “The Land Down Under: Life in a Many Cultured Society”. In this film, we documented the owners, workers and customers of Roli Poli Café in Sunshine, to explore the idea of food as a way to bring cultures together and share stories.
Here’s a photo from the shoot (more on the YMMP Facebook page: www.facebook.com/youngmediamakersproject)
Di, Mareng, Sher Nay and Stacy have been busy editing at home, at Phoenix Youth Centre, at Footscray Community Arts Centre, at the City Library… it really has been a team effort. Sher Nay has also provided some original music and filmmaker/artist Lisa Hilli has been in to support with editing assistance.
Fingers crossed all goes well for the festival!!! We will let you know if it is selected to screen!

REFUGEE WEEK FILM FESTIVAL
Recently, four of the YMMP films were screened as part of the Refugee Week Film Festival in Yarraville at the Sun Theatre. It was great to see the films screen in front of a crowd again! Two of the YMMP filmmakers, Sher Nay Moo and Peter Ajak gave a speech on the night and they did a fantastic job. We also had a chance to sell a few DVDs to the public which is always exciting.
Here’s a photo from the evening:

Participants Mareng, Stacy and Law were recently involved in Rachel Main’s ‘street portrait’ project. It was a good opportunity for us to get in front of the camera! To attend the opening exhibition in Footscray, Melbourne, please see the following link and project description from the FACEBOOK event:

This Is Mine… FOOTSCRAY EDITION is a photographic project focusing on connecting people with their community spaces. A series of six staged photographic shoots took place in various public areas of Footscray featuring individuals and groups who work, recreate, study and live in Footscray. ‘The models’ were set-up outside with elements borrowed from their inside environment. These ‘street portraits’ were then printed as bill posters and will be pasted back onto the wall spaces around the area and also at the Footscray Community Arts Centre. This project aims to connect people with their environment and each other by taking ownership and personalising the walls and spaces of the local community. This event is for the opening night and if you can’t make it, go check out the work another time, either at the Footscray Community Arts Centre or discover them on the walls of Footscray!!
More info about the project and the locations of the bill posters will be available on my website: (This project has been funded through the Maribyrnong City Council Community Grant Program, in conjunction with the Footscray Community Arts Centre). |

Recently, young media makers Law, Mareng, and Stacy (from YMMP 2011) participated in a photography project run by photographer/ teacher/ artist Rachel Main (www.rachelmainphotography.com). The project consists of a series of street portraits of people who live, work and play in and around Footscray, photographed in an outdoor location doing what they do. Later, the photos will be printed as posters and shown as part of an exhibition at Footscray Community Arts Centre (stay tuned for details) but also, the photographs will be posted on walls in and around the streets of Footscray.
We were very excited to be invited to be a part of the project and it was a welcome change to be in front of the camera instead!! We had to look like we were shooting an interview whilst Rachel snapped away. It was a great experience and we look forward to seeing the whole series and going to the exhibition.
Here’s a few behind the scenes photos.

We recently met to discuss what’s in store for this year. Dan from Open Channel came along to our small group meeting to discuss RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) for past YMMP participants who would like to go on and study the Cert III in Media at Open Channel. This means that the work we did last year can potentially be put towards the certificate. At least four YMMP participants are taking up this opportunity. We also discussed the potential of running regular movie nights at Phoenix Youth Centre, going on excursions to film related events, film ideas, the potential of work experience in the film industry for participants and much more…
Other exciting news is that we will be involved in a project with photographer/ teacher Rachel Main (www.rachelmainphotography.com). She is taking street portraits of people who live, work and play in and around Footscray, Melbourne and would like YMMP participants to be in one of the photos. So this week we will be in front of the camera… not behind it! This is very exciting… stay tuned!

YMMP 2011 produced a group of talented young emerging filmmakers. In 2012 the project will continue through a spin off project called Young Diverse Media Trainees – a mentoring and networking program for past YMMP participants as well as other young people living in Melbourne who are interested in film. Filmmaker/ YMMP facilitator, Amie Batalibasi will continue to mentor the group in 2012. The group will hold monthly meetings, excursions to film-related events, invite industry professionals along to share knowledge, act as a networking opportunity for young people with similar interests. As well, information and support will be provided for those wanting to go on to further study and participants will be encouraged to pursue work experience opportunities in the film industry.
We will continue to document our stories as these filmmakers get out there and into the ‘real world’. Stay tuned here and on YMMP Facebook! Thanks to Maribyrnong City Council for supporting YMMP’s new phase.
